We’re excited to host our first social media chat on Bluesky to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of National Public Health Week. APHA, its members and partners will explore key issues, share insights and amplify important messages for today’s public health community — and that of the future. Below, you'll find details on how to sign up for Bluesky and participate in the chat, along with tips for responding to our questions.
How to Sign Up for Bluesky
If you haven’t joined Bluesky yet, follow these steps to create an account:
- Visit bsky.app and click “Sign Up”.
- Create your account by entering your email, choosing a username and setting a password.
- Follow @apha.org to stay updated on our chat and other public health discussions.
- Explore the platform and familiarize yourself with how replies and hashtags work.
How to Join the Conversation
- Be online at 2 p.m. ET on April 9. Follow @apha.org so you can see our questions in real time.
- Watch for our numbered questions (Q1, Q2, etc.), which we will post every eight minutes.
- Reply to each question using the corresponding format (e.g., A1 for Q1, A2 for Q2) and include #NPHWChat in your response.
- Engage with others! Like, repost, and reply to others’ answers to keep the conversation flowing.
Chat Questions
We will be discussing seven key questions during the chat. Here are the questions we’ll be asking:
Q1 Looking Back, Moving Forward – Over the past 30 years, the public health community has tackled major challenges, from disease and injury prevention to health equity. What achievements stand out to you as being the most important and impactful?
Q2 It Starts Here – Public health begins in our communities with school nurses, community health centers and local health offices. Stronger partnerships lead to healthier communities. What strategies do you use to build strong partnerships?
Q3 Resiliency and Communities – With extreme weather events becoming more common, preparation is key. What strategies have been most effective in helping you and your community to prepare for extreme weather?
Q4 Encouraging Healthier Lives – Staying active and eating well are among the best ways to improve overall health. What are some creative and inclusive policies that promote healthy living?
Q5 Public Health Workforce – What are some innovative ways for public health professionals to engage with their community in this time of potential contraction of the governmental public health workforce?
Q6 Public Health in Action – All communities, rural, urban and everything in between require strong public health systems. What are unique approaches you have used to engage policymakers to assure a public health system that promotes opportunities for everyone in your community to be healthy?
Q7 The Future of Public Health – Knowing the achievements of the last 30 years, what do you see as the biggest opportunities for public health professionals to make a lasting impact in the next 5, 10 or 20 years?
Tips for Answering Questions
- Be concise – Keep answers brief and impactful. Bluesky limits each post to 300 characters.
- Use statistics or facts – If possible, include data or research to support your points.
- Tag relevant organizations – If your response aligns with work from a partner, tag them to boost visibility.
- Add links – Share helpful resources that contribute to the discussion.
- Use visuals – If you have graphics or infographics, attach them to enhance engagement. Please include alt text to make your visuals are more accessible to people with visual impairments.
- Engage with others – Like and reply to keep the conversation dynamic.
